LEGENDARY MATCH | JAPAN vs FRANCE | Men’s VNL 2023

LEGENDARY MATCH | JAPAN vs FRANCE | Men’s VNL 2023. Kento Miyaura was Japan’s golden substitution in their fourth Volleyball Nations League 2023 victory. The sub-in opposite powered the home team to a win over defending VNL champions France in the last Pool 2 game in Nagoya on Sunday. This result pushed Japan to the top of the current standings on 12 points and only two sets lost, and only previous leaders USA have a shot at reclaiming the first place after week one, should they take the three points from their last match in Ottawa later in the day. Meanwhile, France are leaving Nagoya with a 1-3 win-loss record and three points, currently standing 12th in the table.

Japan and France finished the match level on attack points and kill blocks, but the Asians outserved the Europeans with seven aces against three. The unforced mistakes were also more abundant on the French side. Outside hitters Ran Takahashi and captain Yuki Ishikawa led the home team’s scorers with 17 and 16 points, respectively, while Miyaura was right behind them with 13 (including a block and two aces), delivering 10 of them in the last set alone. French opposite Theo Faure was the best scorer of the match on 21 points, including four blocks. Outsides Kevin Tillie and Timothee Carle added 14 and 13, respectively, for France.

With Faure in brilliant shape at the net, France had the upper hand for the most part of the first set, but eventually could not hold on to their five-point lead as Japan caught up at 17-17 to prompt an exciting epilogue. The point-for-point battle was pushed to overtime. The home team denied two French set points before Faure brought in the third one with a successful spike and converted it himself to a 27-25 win with a monster block, his ninth point of the set. To get back into the game, Japan outblocked France in set two. They were in control of the scoreboard for the better part of the set, but the Europeans, persistent in attack, especially through Carle, came back to draw level at 20-20 and even take the next rally to step in front. Japan regained the lead and pushed ahead to win the set by 25-22 on a monster block by sub-in Miyaura.

The third set offered an even battle with the lead going back and forth until a 20-20 tie. However, from that point on, it was the French unforced errors that tilted the set Japan’s way. The home side took the next four rallies with Ishikawa on the serve and himself bringing in set point with a smashing pipe for 24-20. Two serving errors down the road, Japan celebrated a 25-21 set win. Miyaura was instrumental to the home team winning the fourth set. It went level trough 8-8, when he spiked for 9-8 and went behind the serving line to fire up the crowd on the stands with two aces in a row for 11-8. France never gave up and managed to tie the score again at 19-19. But Miyaura once again played a key role in a five-point series, bringing in match point with his 10th point of the set. Once again, two serving errors later, the home team and the home fans could celebrate the fourth victory at 25-20 in the fourth set.

HISTORICAL MATCH | JAPAN vs BRAZIL | Men’s VNL 2023

HISTORICAL MATCH | JAPAN vs BRAZIL | Men’s VNL 2023

HISTORICAL MATCH | JAPAN vs BRAZIL | Men’s VNL 2023. It was a thrilling full-set match between the #2 world-ranked powerhouse, Brazil, and the #7 underdogs, Japan. It was a long, hard-fought battle, and both teams displayed excellent world-class plays, but the scores of 25–23 | 25–21 | 18–15 | 22–25 | 18–16 gave Japan their 1st ever win against Brazil after 30-years in an FIVB tournament. A historic win for the Japanese as they struggled to win against a higher-ranked team in the league, and they remain undefeated with a tally of 7–0.

Even mighty Brazil failed to stop Japan’s winning streak in Volleyball Nations League 2023 as the two teams met in a Pool 3 match in Orleans on Thursday. The table leaders edged the world’s number two team to claim a tight victory, their seventh since the start of the competition. However, Japan lost their first point, so now they have 20 on top of the current standings. Brazil are fourth on a 4-2 win-loss record and 13 points.

Three Japanese players topped the scorers’ chart of the match on 20+ points each. Outside hitter and captain Yuki Ishikawa delivered the match high of 27, including two aces, followed by opposite Kento Miyaura with 24, including an ace and a block, and outside Ran Takahashi with 21, including two aces. Miyaura and Takahashi registered high success rates in attack, 59% and 61%, respectively. Opposite Alan Souza was Brazil’s leading scorer with 20 points, all spikes.

While Yuki Ishikawa was taking care of business in attack, Japan fired as many as five aces to dominate on the court throughout the first set and reach a quadruple set point at 24-20. Brazil denied the first three opportunities, but on the fourth, Ran Takahashi put an end to the set at 25-23. Japan stepped up their spiking effort in set two, with Ishikawa continuing to spearhead the offence, and stayed well in control. They opened up a comfortable gap and kept pace until Takahashi again, this time with a blistering pipe shot, closed the set at 25-21.

Brazil struck back in set three. After 5-5, they broke away and never looked back. Outside hitter Henrique Honorato took charge of the attack and led his team to an emphatic 25-18 win. Japan’s improved attack in the fourth set was offset by some great Brazilian blocking. Middle blocker Flavio Gualberto put away three stuffs and playmaker Bruno Rezende added one to help their team prevail on the way to leveling the match. Opposite Alan Souza was quite productive in offence, but in the end it was outside Ricardo Lucarelli who hammered the 25-22 set winner.

The tie-breaker was really competitive. Kento Miyaura was on fire to give his team a slight lead, but the gap never exceeded two points and the set went to overtime. While Miyaura and Ishikawa’s powerful hits kept bringing in those match points, finally, it was Takahashi who converted one with a block-out shot for 18-16.

“I can’t believe this!” exclaimed Takahashi after the game. “We trained a lot for this match against Brazil and came out to give everything on the court. So it was a really good game today. Brazil have a lot of great players and we are a young team, still growing up, but it doesn’t matter. We had to play our volleyball…”

STARTING SIX
Team Japan: Onodera (MB), Miyaura (OP), Yamauchi (MB), Sekita (S), Ran (OH), Ishikawa (OH) and Yamamoto (L)
Team Brazil: Bruno (S), Otávio (MB), Onorato (OH), Lucas (MB), Lucarelli (OH), Alan (OP) and Thales (L)
